Creating a dedicated area for your baby when space is limited is easier than you think – luckily babies don't take up much room. Clearing out unneeded furniture and clutter is the key to organizing tight living quarters. Watch how one family took on a big do-it-yourself project and set up an adorable nursery nook in their master bedroom.

Becky: We're Becky and Mike, and we've been married just shy of a year. And we are expecting our first and only – our one-and-done son will be joining us this September.

Mike: The baby room was a bit of a challenge. I think the hardest part was really trying to figure out how to get everything in such a small space, and really making sure we maximize every inch of that space.

The Experts: Melisa and Pam from Project Nursery

Melisa: So, Melisa, you have one bedroom and you have to fit obviously yourselves and baby. What do you do?

Melisa: I know. Baby on the way. It is such a common problem, right?

Pam: It is.

Melisa: You're a young couple.

Pam: Staying in the city.

Melisa: I know, the baby, they're going to have to share a room. Well, it's not a problem, because it's easily done. It can happen. And they start by removing the clothes and the clutter. They've got to purge.

Pam: Definitely. I mean, I think it's a great opportunity to get rid of a lot of stuff, edit down. Okay, Melisa, what's the plan?

Melisa: Organization is number one top priority.

Pam: Right. Bins and baskets: Think vertical. You know, it's really about getting organized and having everything in a place, right?

Melisa: They need space planning.

Pam: Space planning.

Melisa: So use furniture as double-duty.

Pam: Got that existing dresser. Let's put a topper, make it secure, and boom – it's ready for baby.

Melisa: And don't forget color palette.

Pam: Yes, it's got to be sophisticated but it can work for baby. And also, you know, really picking meaningful items and not overwhelming the room.

Melisa: Exactly.

Becky: We got some great tips to help us with our nursery which we really needed. We cut back on clothes. We were able to bring in an extra wardrobe to tuck everything in and make it look a lot more clean. I think one of my favorite tips was all the clothes that were on the wall, all the jewelry, a lot of the makeup – we took that over into our closet and went upward.

Mike: Taking closet doors off made it much easier for her to get in and out. And really, putting up the curtains, which I was a little bit against at first, sounded a little silly, but they look great, and it makes it look much cleaner in the room. Looking at the before and after, ah, wow. Makes you realize what you really can do, and really makes you realize, when you put a little bit of effort and time into it, how nice it can look.

Becky: I think that putting the nursery together really made it real for us, and emotional.

Mike: For me, putting that crib together and realizing how much tighter I was making sure the locks were, how much care I was putting to make sure everything was correct, no extra parts, means you realize the – what it really means. Geez.
